Along with the new TDI BlueMotion, GTI, GTD and Estate, the seventh generation of the bestseller will also make its debut as a Golf TGI BlueMotion powered with natural gas (CNG) on the shores of Lake Geneva. At the same time, Volkswagen is renaming its so-called "EcoFuel" natural gas models as "TGI BlueMotion." The new Golf TGI BlueMotion will be launched as classic hatchback version in the summer and as estate car in the autumn.
First MQB natural gas model. The new model is the first natural gas vehicle to be based on the new modular transverse matrix (MQB). MQB models are designed such that all conceivable drive types that can be realistically implemented today can be used in them.
1.4 TSI with 110 PS. The Golf TGI BlueMotion is powered by a newly developed 81 kW / 110 PS natural gas engine (at 5,000 to 6,000 rpm); the maximum torque of 200 Nm is available at 1.500 rpm (up to 3,700 rpm). The bi-fuel (designed for natural gas and petrol) 1.4 TSI (charged turbo direct injection engine) enables extraordinarily wide driving ranges: In pure CNG operation (with natural gas), the driving range for the version with a 6-speed manual gearbox is a good 420 km. In this mode, the car's consumption is 3.5 kg of natural gas per 100 km (equivalent to 94 g/km CO2). When petrol is also used, this adds about 940 km to the car's range (fuel consumption: 5.3 l/100 km). This means: When the two natural gas underbody tanks (together 15 kg) and the petrol tank (50 litre) are completely full, the Golf TGI BlueMotion reaches a theoretical range of 1,360 kilometres – thus the Hamburg-Geneva distance can be driven on a single fill-up of the tanks with no problems at all. If the Golf TGI BlueMotion is equipped with the optional 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG), an even greater driving range is achieved thanks to a combined fuel consumption of 3.4 kg/100 km natural gas or 5.0 l/100 km petrol. With a minimum of 92 g/km CO2, the Golf TGI BlueMotion is a milestone for the realization of an emission value of 95 g/km CO2 for fleets legally required as of 2020.
Agile Golf TGI BlueMotion. As fuel-efficient as it is, the new Golf TGI BlueMotion offers an agile driving performance compared to many other natural gas vehicles. The Volkswagen accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 10.7 seconds. Its top speed: 194 km/h.
TGI in three equipment lines. The specific standard features of the Golf TGI BlueMotion, which always comes as a four-door vehicle and is available in the Trendline, Comfortline and Highline versions include, among other things, two range and tank displays (for the gas engine and the petrol engine); the operating mode in use is always displayed to the driver. Naturally, the fuel door module with integrated petrol filler neck and natural gas connection was likewise redesigned, depending on the version. Thus petrol and natural gas can be acquired comfortably at one pump. The end pipe of the exhaust system, which is especially short in terms of natural gas, is invisible in the Golf TGI BlueMotion; it is located in front of the back axle, underneath the vehicle. Having an eye on fuel consumption, the Golf TGI BlueMotion, like the Golf TDI BlueMotion, will be offered with wheel/tyre combinations of a maximum of 16 inches.
